In 1993, Steven Betts opened the first Pacific Northwest Garden Supply Ltd. in Surrey B.C. Previously working in the hydroponics industry, Steven had a strong desire to learn and sell hydroponic equipment as well as support urban agriculture.
With the location and timing ripe for growth, Steven brought on his first partner, Justin Cooper, to help him with the original location. This dynamic duo that started the original location have now been responsible for building the largest privately owned hydroponics chain in Canada.
When the time came for expansion, Vancouver was the next logical place with the company’s sights on servicing the largest city in British Columbia. PNW’s success has largely been due to the loyal staff members like James and feel that is just one of the biggest strengths.
1997-98 was the year the Maple Ridge store was on the map. Jana has been working the front counter for over a decade and chances are if you shop there she knows you by your first name. Personable and friendly, she is always happy to help.
The Nelson store took the Kootenay’s by storm. David, owner and Author of The Growers Handbook, has been able to service his community by offering solid advice that has helped many growers achieve the best results in their gardens. He employs the concept that “it is not enough to know how something works but you need to know why it works”.
Long time manager of the Surrey shop, Dan Coomber, jumped at the opportunity to become an owner by opening a new store in Mission. Dan has embraced the rural community of experienced growers.
The Squamish store focuses on the Sea to Sky corridor. Emulating everything that is west coast. Owner Chris Lebouch has embraced the active and outdoor community that is known for its extreme sports and the love of gardening.
No novice to the industry, Abby has moved on after years of managing the Surrey location to open his own shop in Prince George. With many years of experience under his belt you can trust that his recommendations are going to help bring you the best quality crop with the biggest yields. If his friendly demeanor isn’t enough to keep you coming back to the shop the combined growing knowledge of him and his new hire Heather – being in the industry for nearly a decade – will be.
Kelowna has been another important location. Owner, Remco, has proven he can cultivate customers by giving them the best products, service and selection. Dallas, the manager, has been a shining star for the company with a heart of gold.
The philosophy that is carried throughout the company is “making others successful in their gardening efforts, in turn makes yourself successful”.
