Don't know too much about "spiking" but loading up plants with high levels of phosphorous in early flower stage causes the plants vertical growth to slow down making nodes/flower sites grow closer together.

This can be also done using products like Top Load, PhosphoLoad, Mega Bud and Dr Nodes.
